Valle d'Itria cuore di Puglia. The name, which means Itria Valley, is actually inaccurate, as this area is a kind of plateau marked by hills and hollows dotted with trulli and masserie, the typical local farmhouses, which create one among Apulia's most picturesque landscapes.

The name of this wide karst basin, which includes over 20,000 trulli, is probably derived from the cult of the Madonna Odegitria (which means "The One Who inicates the Path" in Greek), protectress of wayfarers.

The landscape of this region has been deeply marked by the action of man, who has turned the age-old forests into a fertile land of perfectly tilled vineyards and olive groves, skilfully succeeding in drawing the necessary water from the karst soil.
